Landing at Catalina Island feels like you’ve arrived in a foreign country. Situated a mere 17nm offshore from the Los Angeles coast, the Catalina offers something unique for everyone. The airport is found on almost every “top airports in the US” list, given it’s unique geography. The runway sits 1602 feet above the ocean - which is only a mile from the approach end of Runway 22.
At the airport, the DC-3 Grill cooks up tasty Bison burgers, if you’re just flying over for lunch or dinner. If you want to go to Avalon or Two Harbors, there is a regular bus. Check the website for current times and prices - generally the bus runs hourly, so make sure you time your arrival properly if you’re planning to go to town.
The airport does charge a landing fee. The Airport offers an “aero club membership” for an annual fee, which waives the landing fee and offers a few other benefits.
There is camping available at the airport (near the departure end of RW22). I’m not certain if you need to be a member of the aero club to use the camp ground - call ahead to inquire.
